Teaching approach / What to expect.
I firmly believe that learning a language should be fun! If you enjoy learning, you learn so much better. Lessons are designed specifically to suit your needs, tailor-made for each person, so you learn what YOU want to, be that conversation, reading or listening comprehension, grammar / the structure of the language, cultural insights, translation skills, discussion of French / German literary works, films, current affairs, etc. Before and during the first introductory lesson, we will establish your level of prior knowledge (if any), preferred style of learning, and what you want to achieve, whether that is an A grade at A Level, French or German for holidays or business, or brushing up your existing skills. The time and length of lessons are arranged to suit you. I believe that accuracy and accent are extremely important, but bear in mind that you learn by making mistakes – so just have the confidence to have a go, and you will gain so much! If you choose the online learning option, how does online teaching work?
It is just like being in a room for a one-to-one teaching session in person – but via a computer. All you need is a computer and a webcam. The teacher and student can see and hear each other. I generally use Skype or Windows Live Messenger, thus I can instantly send a student the spelling or phonetic pronunciation of phrases (etc) as we talk. Classes can also be recorded to listen to again if necessary. Skype and Windows Live Messenger are both quick, easy and free to install and use. Worksheets can be emailed to you before, during and after lessons. If you wish, homework can be emailed to you to be completed, then I will mark it and provide detailed feedback. The great advantage of online learning is that you can learn in the comfort of your own home, cutting down on travel time if you are busy, or making learning accessible if you have mobility problems or are housebound for any reason.
Preparing students for GCSE, AS Level and A level exams is a speciality, as is adult education, especially for those who had a negative experience of learning foreign languages at school. I have extensive experience in both of these areas. I have also designed a course for Primary School teachers who now have to have a ‘bilingual classroom’, so they can learn basic classroom commands, songs and games in French / German to adhere to syllabus requirements. In addition, I have a great deal of experience teaching people with illnesses and disabilities and am used to catering for their learning needs.
Why learn a foreign language?
Being able to speak and understand a foreign language is a Life Skill we should all possess. Not only does it make one more employable and open up educational possibilities, but on a personal level it leads to a whole new world of opportunity. Being able to communicate in the native language of the country you are visiting makes you a more welcome guest, makes it easier to meet people and make new friends, learn about the country’s culture, and generally have a more fulfilling travel and life experience.
